Telecom tower site monitoring: power, backup, climate and access for every base station in one view

Remotely supervising the towers and base stations of a telecom network does not require replacing their equipment: each site gets a Phantom Shield gateway that reads the grid power, rectifiers, battery banks, generator, fuel, shelter climate, access control and CCTV already installed. The Reveal platform brings every site into one view, alerts only when a condition needs action and keeps a time-stamped history. This guide explains what is supervised at each site, how it works, how access is controlled, when you don't need it and where it already runs.

What is supervised at each base station

  • Grid power: voltage fluctuations, intermittent outages and supply drops at each site
  • Rectifiers and lithium or lead-acid battery banks: voltage, discharge curves, health and service life
  • Generator: idle, running or in fault, starts, run hours and automatic transfer switch (ATS) position
  • Generator fuel tank: level, consumption, estimated autonomy and level drops while the generator is not running
  • Shelter and cabinet climate: out-of-range temperature and HVAC failure or shutdown
  • Access: door, cabinet and gate openings outside the scheduled hours, motion, wall vibration and tampers
  • Site CCTV: recorders and cameras offline, plus the images of every access event

Each site, urban or rural, connects through its own gateway and all of them share the same view, with the same rules and alerts, even when their equipment comes from different brands and eras. Today, in production, GSS reads the ATS position, each generator's run hours and battery bank voltage.

How it works: from each site's equipment to the operations center

  1. 1Connect. Phantom Shield reads the site's generator controller, automatic transfer switch, rectifiers, battery monitor, HVAC and access sensors over Modbus RTU/TCP, SNMP, BACnet, MQTT or HTTP/REST, with no firmware or hardware changes.
  2. 2Collect. Readings arrive continuously, with local storage on the gateway (store and forward): if the link drops during an outage, the data stays on the gateway and syncs when the connection returns.
  3. 3Normalize. Reveal maps every signal to a common semantic layer (Brick), so a rectifier, a generator or a battery bank of any brand reads the same way at every site.
  4. 4Analyze. Reveal learns each site's normal behavior and detects generators that start without a scheduled outage or fail to start, fuel that drops while the generator is off, degrading batteries and a shelter heating up, and crosses it with access events.
  5. 5Act. Management by exception: alerts go out by WhatsApp, email or ticketing to the operations center only when a condition needs action, and staff go to the site once Reveal confirms it.

How access to each station is controlled

The gateway authorizes entry through prior scheduling or remote authorization, and lets the site be armed and disarmed from a local keypad or from the operations center. Without a scheduled visit, presence at the station triggers an alert to the operations center.

If someone opens the battery cabinet without authorization, the system triggers an autonomous deterrence response (an ink system) and immediately alerts the operations center through Reveal. Before this model, an intrusion into a cabinet could go unnoticed for hours or days.

What changes in how the network is run

Operations stop depending on routine site checks: the team supervises dozens or hundreds of stations from one central point, knows in real time which site has a problem and runs more sites without growing its technical team in the same proportion.

The time-stamped history of every outage, generator start, opening and alarm is kept as the record needed to prove uptime against SLAs. New gateways use zero-touch provisioning and their firmware is signed; in sensitive contexts such as CCTV they run read only.

When a piece of site equipment has no data output

If a panel, an older rectifier or a climate unit offers no data output, the cameras already installed can read its indicators, and Reveal processes those images as one more signal. IoT sensors are added to equipment that was never instrumented and, where wiring is hard, Modbus-to-LoRaWAN converters carry the readings wirelessly.

When you don't need it

  • You run a few sites and your team can visit them as often as needed
  • Your operations center already receives power, batteries, generator, fuel, climate and access for every site in one view
  • You want to replace rectifiers, generators or air conditioners: Reveal works on top of what is already installed
  • What you need is to manage radio and transmission equipment: this guide covers the site's physical infrastructure

If your network has hundreds of sites spread across urban and rural areas, and today a battery theft, a generator out of fuel or an overheated shelter is found on the next visit, that is where remote supervision changes how you operate.

Where this model already runs

Telecom operator, 460 sites

Cabinets, backup batteries and access at its base stations report to its operations center; after installation, 85% less vandalism and USD 2.3 million saved.

Free trade zone: backup and fuel

Generators, UPS units, power metering and tank levels on one dashboard, with an alert if backup can't take load or fuel won't cover the committed autonomy.

Medical center, 7 generators

Seven backup generators, 17 energy points and 2 fire systems add up to 26 primary connections, with a warning if a generator starts without a scheduled outage.

FAQ: telecom tower site monitoring

What can be supervised remotely at a tower or base station?

Grid power, rectifiers and battery banks, the generator and its automatic transfer switch, fuel level and consumption, shelter temperature and HVAC, access to doors, cabinets and gates, and CCTV. Phantom Shield reads them at each site and Reveal brings them into one view.

Do the site's rectifiers, generator or HVAC have to be replaced?

No. Phantom Shield reads the controllers, rectifiers, battery monitors and climate units already installed, regardless of brand or age, over Modbus, SNMP, BACnet, MQTT or HTTP/REST, with no firmware or hardware changes.

How is battery or fuel theft detected at a remote site?

Phantom Shield detects an unauthorized battery-cabinet opening and alerts the operations center, and Reveal detects fuel level drops while the generator is not running. An operator with 460 sites cut vandalism events by 85% with this model.

What happens if a shelter's HVAC fails?

In a closed shelter, an HVAC shutdown can push the temperature to critical levels within minutes. Reveal watches the temperature and climate status at each site and alerts as soon as they go out of range, before the equipment degrades.

What happens if the site's link drops during an outage?

The gateway stores the readings locally (store and forward) and syncs them when the connection returns, so the site's history has no gaps right when the outage happens.

Does the history help prove uptime against SLAs?

Yes. Every outage, generator start, opening, alarm and alert is logged with date and time, from detection to resolution, as the record needed to prove uptime against SLAs and for audits.

How is monitoring for a telecom site network priced?

By primary connection: each piece of equipment, panel or data source connected through Phantom Shield counts as one. The proposal includes a one-time fee for equipment, installation and onboarding, plus a monthly service fee. Tell us how many sites and how much equipment you have and we will prepare a proposal.

How many sites and which equipment do you want to supervise?

Tell us how many towers or base stations you run and what equipment each one has, and we will show you in a demo how Reveal brings their power, backup, climate and access into one view without replacing what you already have.
