Remote monitoring of backup generators, UPS units and battery banks
GSS Analytix remotely monitors backup generators, UPS units and battery banks across multisite operations, reading the controllers, network cards and battery monitors already installed. The Phantom Shield gateway connects each device, and the Reveal platform confirms, site by site, that backup power is ready to take load before an outage, with no hardware replacement and no civil works.
What it measures
- Status of each generator (standby, running or fault), starts, stops and run hours
- Generator and UPS voltage, current and load
- Automatic transfer switch (ATS) position: grid or generator
- Generator fuel tank level, consumption and estimated autonomy
- Battery bank voltage, UPS autonomy and battery health (discharge curves and lifespan)
- Rectifiers and temperature of the generator room, shelter or battery cabinet
- Generator and UPS alarms, and battery cabinet opening
In production today, GSS reads automatic transfer switch (ATS) position, generator run hours and battery bank voltage.
How it works on the equipment you already have
- 1Connect. Phantom Shield, physical or virtual, reads the generator controller, the automatic transfer switch, the UPS network card and the battery monitor or rectifiers over Modbus RTU/TCP, SNMP, BACnet, MQTT or HTTP/REST. Where wiring is hard, Modbus-to-LoRaWAN converters carry the readings wirelessly, and where a device has no data output, existing cameras can read its indicators.
- 2Collect. Continuous reads with local storage on the gateway (store and forward): if the internet drops during an outage, data stays on the gateway and syncs on reconnect.
- 3Normalize. Reveal maps every signal into a common semantic layer (Brick), so generators, UPS units and battery banks from different brands compare the same way.
- 4Analyze. Reveal learns each device's normal behavior and detects starts without a scheduled outage, generators that fail to start, fuel level drops while the generator is not running and batteries whose discharge curve is degrading, and correlates them with grid events, temperature and site access.
- 5Act. Alerts via WhatsApp, email or ticketing, audit-ready reports and uptime evidence and, on equipment that supports it, automatic actions such as activating backups, with every action logged.
Results in real operations
High-complexity medical center, Colombia
7 backup generators supervised continuously (operating status, voltage and current) together with 17 energy metering points and 2 fire detection systems: 26 primary connections in one platform, with an alert when a generator starts running without a scheduled outage.
Nationwide telecom operator
Remote protection and monitoring of base station cabinets and their lithium/lead-acid backup batteries at 460 sites: 85% fewer vandalism events and USD 2.3 million in real savings.
Free trade zones
Backup infrastructure, electrical metering and fuel levels in one dashboard, with an alert when a generator or UPS is not ready to take load or when a tank falls below the minimum required for the committed autonomy.
Generator test runs as compliance evidence for hospitals
Reveal automatically logs every scheduled generator test run, such as the weekly exercise: start, run time, ATS transfer, voltage, load and alarms, all time-stamped. In a hospital, that history replaces the paper logbook and is ready as evidence for audits, accreditations and regulatory inspections.
Who it is for
- Telecom operators with towers, base stations and cabinets at remote sites
- Hospitals and clinics where power continuity cannot fail
- Shopping centers, retail chains and fuel stations with generators and UPS units at every site
- Free trade zones and industrial parks that must prove backup power is ready

Generator, UPS and battery monitoring FAQ
Which generator, UPS and battery bank variables can be monitored remotely?
With Reveal, GSS Analytix records each generator's status (standby, running or fault), starts, stops and run hours, voltage, current and load, the automatic transfer switch (ATS) position, fuel level and autonomy, battery bank voltage, UPS autonomy, temperature and alarms. ATS position, run hours and battery bank voltage are read in production today.
Do I need to replace the generator controller or the UPS to monitor them in the cloud?
No. Phantom Shield reads the generator controllers, UPS network cards and battery monitors already installed over Modbus, SNMP, BACnet or MQTT and sends their data to Reveal, with no firmware or hardware changes. Where a device has no data output, existing cameras can read its indicators.
How do I know a generator is ready to take load before an outage?
Reveal continuously watches each generator's status, alarms and fuel level, not just during tests. It alerts when a generator fails to start, when it starts running without a scheduled outage or when a tank falls below the minimum required for the committed autonomy, so it can be fixed before backup power is needed.
How are UPS autonomy and battery bank health monitored?
Phantom Shield reads UPS units, rectifiers and battery banks over SNMP and Modbus. Reveal tracks battery voltage, discharge curves, health and lifespan and each UPS unit's autonomy, flags the ones that are degrading and alerts before a power failure affects operations.
Can fuel or battery theft be detected at remote sites?
Yes. Reveal detects fuel level drops while the generator is not running, and Phantom Shield detects unauthorized opening of a battery cabinet and alerts the monitoring center. A telecom operator with 460 sites cut vandalism events by 85% with this model.
What alerts and reports does generator, UPS and battery monitoring provide?
Reveal sends alerts via WhatsApp, email or ticketing systems when a variable goes out of range, and keeps a time-stamped history that serves as evidence for hospital accreditations, SLA contracts and audits. It can also be queried in natural language, by text or voice, through any compatible LLM.
Does Reveal log scheduled generator test runs as compliance evidence?
Yes. Reveal automatically logs every scheduled generator test run, such as the weekly exercise, with start, run time, ATS transfer, voltage, load and alarms. In hospitals, that time-stamped history serves as evidence for audits, accreditations and regulatory inspections, with no paper logbooks.
How many generators, UPS units and battery banks do you want to supervise?
Projects are sized by primary connection: each generator, UPS, battery bank or data source connected through Phantom Shield counts as one. Tell us how many sites and backup assets you have and we will prepare a proposal.
